YouTube has seen a number of updates since its launch in 2005, but following its 17th birthday earlier this year, the company has decided to further refine its appearance, revealing two of the updates that could change the way you use YouTube.
After several requests, YouTube finally introduced the option to zoom in and out a video. Best of all, letting go of the screen doesn’t automatically zoom out the video. This means you can enjoy an enlarged video without the hassle of having to keep your fingers on the screen throughout the entire video.
precise search it is also a potential watershed. Available for web and mobile, the feature allows you to view multiple thumbnails of your video in the video player. This is particularly useful when you want to find a specific part of your video.
These powerful video utilities can overshadow the work YouTube has done to update its interface.
YouTube UX Director Nate Koechley has released a blog today that outlined the platform reform.
The changes start with Ambient Mode. By using dynamic color sampling, the mode subtly adds the overall color of the video you are watching to the background of the app. The goal is to increase focus and draw user attention to your device. Ambient Mode also helps add vibrancy to the screen without turning it into a distraction. It is available on the web and mobile devices and can be activated by turning in the dark theme.
The dark theme has also had an update in terms of hue. It is now darker than before in an attempt to make your video stand out even more. This feature is coming to the mobile web and even Smart TVs.
The video player is also getting an update aimed at reducing some of the clutter. YouTube links in video descriptions that currently look quite confusing and all over the place will be transformed to look like buttons. The current like, share and download buttons will be reformatted to give a cleaner look. Also, the big red subscribe button will get a new color, shape and contrast level. Again, the goal is for him to stand out more than he already does.
