The latest PS5 update just made one of its best features a lot easier to find.
Sony has quietly announced the PS5 feature on the official PlayStation support page (opens in new tab). The announcement details exactly what the latest system update brings, with automatic low latency (or ALLM) support definitely in the spotlight.
The update is available now and will be downloaded the next time you turn on your PS5. However, keep in mind that the update will take up approximately 1GB of storage space on your console’s SSD.
To use ALLM on PS5, you’ll need a TV that supports the feature and an HDMI 2.1 cable. Then enter your PS5 Definitions menu, followed by screen and video, video outputand finally ALLM.
If you change the ALLM setting to Auto, your TV will automatically switch to auto low latency mode when you load a game.
Why is ALLM so important?
Low latency auto mode is potentially revolutionary for PS5 gamers. It’s supported by many of the best 4K TVs you can buy, and you can drastically reduce input lag by turning off any display-enhancing settings you might have on your TV.
Sony is on a roll with PS5 updates this year, but ALLM has been quietly released along with the addition of variable refresh rate (or VRR) support. This feature allows the PS5 to maintain a smooth frame rate while increasing resolution, leading to a sharper picture and more responsive gameplay.
Low auto latency and VRR are excellent features for multiplayer games, especially where every split second counts. But it’s a wonderful thing for any kind of game that relies on smart, responsive controls.
Both ALLM and VRR are available on Xbox Series X consoles | S since launch, but PS5 gamers have been in the dark for a while. Fortunately, both features are now available to use on Sony’s main console, as long as you have a TV that supports them.
