The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is likely to be the clamshell folding phone to beat in 2022, but a big rival is set to arrive before it, with the Motorola Razr 2022 being announced on August 2nd. Before that, the company revealed some key details about the phone.
In a post on weibo (opens in new tab) – a Chinese social network – Motorola has revealed that the Razr 2022 will have a 50MP main camera with “main imaging hardware”, while another apparently official teaser image shared by @yabhishekd (opens in new tab) provides a clear view of the main screen.
This image lacks the massive chin of the Motorola Razr 2020, so it looks like we’re getting a major design update here.

That’s not the only promising update the Motorola Razr 2022 appears to offer, as the phone has also appeared on the Telecommunications Terminals Industry Association (TAF) (opens in new tab)‘s, complete with a variety of specifications.
This is a Chinese site where device manufacturers provide details of their upcoming devices, so the information here is likely to be accurate.
In the case of the Motorola Razr 2022, the most notable listed detail is the 3,320mAh battery capacity, which is significantly more than the 2,800mAh we’ve heard previously.
Additionally, it also lists a 6.67-inch 1080 x 2400 OLED main display, a 2.65-inch 573 x 800 OLED secondary display, and a choice of 8GB, 12GB, or 18GB of RAM along with 128GB. , 256GB or 512GB of storage.
It will apparently also be available in a wide range of colors including black, white, blue, cyan, green, gold, red, silver and grey, and will have dimensions of 166.99 × 79.79 × 7.62 mm when unfolded. along with a weight of 200g.
While we’ll take these details with a little salt for now, there’s a high chance they’ll be accurate, and we’ll know for sure very soon, as the full announcement is just a day away at the time of writing.
Analysis: Motorola may finally have a true rival Z Flip
This is Motorola’s third attempt at a foldable phone, and while the first two were interesting, they were also flawed. But from what we’ve heard about the Motorola Razr 2022 so far – and the Galaxy Z Flip 4 – it sounds like Motorola might actually have a chance to compete with Samsung’s next model.
The biggest problem that Motorola’s Razr foldable phones have had in the past is their prices, which have been high and significantly higher than those in the Galaxy Z Flip range. But leaks suggest that the Razr 2022 could be cheaper than its predecessor, while the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 could see a price increase, which could mean these two latest models cost a similar amount.
We were also concerned about the Razr 2022’s battery life, as the Razr 2020 has a mediocre life, and previous leaks suggested the capacity would be the same here. But with this latest news pointing to a larger 3,320mAh juice pack, perhaps Motorola has solved that problem too.
Furthermore, the rumored and confirmed specs seem largely in line with what we’ve come to expect from the Z Flip 4 – except that Motorola’s phone will likely have a larger secondary display.
So with the Z Flip 4 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 launching just a week later on August 10th, we could be in the kind of folding showdown we haven’t seen in a while.
